Information About Tryouts 2021

  1. Registration:

If you have any interest in playing Redmond soccer this year, please register online for “Spring Boys Soccer” through Final Forms by THIS FRIDAY April 30th. You can find the link and instructions on the RHS Athletics page: https://rhs.lwsd.org/athletics. If you need any assistance with this process, please reach out to the Redmond Athletics Secretary, Nicole Showalter at nshowalter@lwsd.org or 425-936-1867. Please note: a player must’ve completed ALL steps in the registration process (except the ASB payment which will not open until after tryouts have concluded) by April 30th in order to be eligible to try out. No exceptions.

  1. Schedule:
    • Monday 5/4: 3:00 – 5:00pm: All tryout participants on the field at the same time. All cleared/eligible players interested in trying out must be at the field no later than 2:45pm with appropriate attire on (mask, athletic shirt, soccer shorts/sweats, shin guards, socks, and cleats). On Monday evening before midnight, players will be notified via the Boosters Website (https://rhsboyssoccer.org) of their groupings and the schedule for the final day of tryouts.
    • Tuesday 5/4: 3:00 – 6:00pm: staggered full-field scrimmages. Different groups of players will arrive and leave at different times per the directions posted on the Boosters Website. Final rosters will be published on the website by midnight on Tuesday evening.
  2. COVID-19 safety measures: All players attending tryouts must always wear a mask. We will also complete attestation at the stadium entrance (including questions and a temperature check). Equipment will be sanitized before and after. Social distancing will be encouraged whenever possible. Players should also always bring their own water with them as none will be provided by RHS.
  3. Evaluative Criteria: there are many factors involved in team placements. But here are some of the components the coaching staff will be assessing during tryouts:
    • Character & Dependability & Coachability
    • Soccer IQ (knowledge + awareness + recognition)
    • Technical Ability (touch, passing, shooting, spacing, off-ball movement)
    • Speed of play
    • Team-first mentality
    • Position-specific requirements/expectations/abilities
    • Academic eligibility
    • Athleticism (pace, stamina, endurance, physicality, etc)
  4. Cuts: unfortunately, due to the competitive nature of soccer at RHS, some players will not make a team this season. If a player has questions about why they did not make a team, what they can work on for next season, or specific team placement, they can reach out to Coach Tangen via email (ttangen@lwsd.org) to schedule a time to meet on Wednesday 5/5. Please remember: this is an extremely competitive program, so there is no shame in being cut. If you do not make a team, we’d strongly encourage you to participate in one of the none-cut sports at RHS such as Track and Field.
  5. Additional info related to tryouts:
    • Many factors are involved in roster decisions
    • No one is guaranteed a spot (even returners)!
    • Attendance at open fields and/or sports conditioning does not guarantee a spot
    • Prior booster membership and parent volunteering roles do not influence team selections.
